It’s been nearly 20 years since plans for a big-screen Hot Wheels movie were first announced, and now it looks like the wheels are really turning.

Following last year’s news that Mattel Films had partnered with Warner Bros. to bring the high-octane adventure to theaters, The Hollywood Reporter (THR) says that the project has a pair of writers that are now in the driver’s seat to pen the screenplay.

According to THR, up-and-coming screenwriting duo Neil Widener and Gavin James beat out several more established writers and teams that had pitched on the Hot Wheels project.

Previous attempts to bring Hot Wheels into theaters date back to 2003, when McG, then fresh off the success of Charlie’s Angels, was slated to direct a version for Sony. Other versions included one from producer Joel Silver (The Matrix) and another from Fast and Furious director Justin Lin.

The hiring of the screenwriters is the first news since the Warner Bros. collaboration was first revealed in January 2019.

Other Mattel Films in development include titles based on American Girl, Barbie, Barney, Magic 8 Ball, Major Matt Mason, Masters of the Universe, and View-Master, and Wishbone.
